| Defacing posters is the most fun part of pre-election campaigns |
I have a confession.
When I was 14 I defaced about six posters of various politicians that were lined up along the main street of Bundaberg. Yes Mum, that really happened. I've been an activist for a while now. No, batman is not my work, but I am quite keen to find a poster of any kind before this snap election is over! I wonder if Sharpie sales go up slightly around this time...
Right at the moment there are a bazillion reasons not to like anybody in politics. However you should be at least a little relieved, appreciative, proud or even resigned to the fact that here in Australia we decide who gets to make the rules through a fairly equitable scheme called voting.
I need to come clean with you - even people who take a keen interest in politics, people who write blogs about that stuff (yeh, me) sometimes have no idea what they are actually voting for in terms of policy and people. I mean, I know what each party stands for roughly, but I certainly don't know the in's and out's of each party's plans. Probably because the Queensland Labor Party haven't actually announced any yet... What I am trying to say is that I love the ABC. They have made available on the interwebs a fun quiz that asks you to rate statements and gives you a score on where you lie (haha get it) on the political spectrum for the upcoming election. It's actually quite informative. According to the people who made it, the aim of the tool is to "promote electoral literacy and public engagement in election campaigns."
So go ahead, politically literate yourself. You may decide you still hate politics, but at least you will be able to choose which posters to deface in a more discerning manner.
